Cedar Mountain Tour

The Cedar Mountain study area is located just south-east of Cedar City. Most research is conducted on the forested rangelands contained within the 1350 ha (3325 acre) CMI study site.

The site is located at an elevation of about 2600m (8,500 feet) in the aspen rangeland of Utah's Iron and Washington Counties. The area is typical of summer range found in southwestern Utah. It receives about 75 cm (30 inches) of precipitation primarily during winter and spring, but also during late summer monsoons. Cool-season plants dominate the site. Major habitat types include oak (Quercus gambellii), grassland, aspen (Populus tremuloides) with a grass understory, aspen with a snowberry (Symphoricarpos oreophilus) understory, and snowberry.

Some photos of the area and various research activities follow:

Wild Ungulate Helicopter Captures

This is a photo of the helicopter equipped with a net gun on the skid.

Animals are herded out of the trees and netted from the helico, they are then hobbled and brought to the research team for collar fitting and fecal and blood collection.

After animals have been processed (including downloading GPS position data and changing the collar batteries) they are released.
