The Cedar Mountain study area is located just south-east of Cedar City. Most
research is conducted on the forested rangelands contained within the 1350
ha (3325 acre) CMI study site.
The site is located at an elevation of about 2600m (8,500 feet) in the aspen
rangeland of Utah's Iron and Washington Counties. The area is typical of summer
range found in southwestern Utah. It receives about 75 cm (30 inches) of precipitation
primarily during winter and spring, but also during late summer monsoons.
Cool-season plants dominate the site. Major habitat types include oak (Quercus
gambellii), grassland, aspen (Populus tremuloides) with a grass
understory, aspen with a snowberry (Symphoricarpos oreophilus) understory,
and snowberry.
